Sons, Prayers and Guns

What have we done
but kept our guns
in the face of our sons.
While we pray on our knees
on top of our chimneys
guns glimmer, next to a cross
the face of Christ lost.

As we say goodnight to our children
and smile, kiss and hug them,
we're relieved we have the right
to stand up and fight.
To keep them from harm,
we thank God, we're armed!

Then wide eyed in horror,
we stand there and shudder...
When a son finds a gun
and kills one by one.

We're victim, judge or juror,
but never helped in murder.
No, you can't blame us,
because in God we trust.

Never do we sit
overfilled with guilt,
because we're too scared
of feeling impaired.
Standing defiantly unbowed,
we're just too proud
and afraid to be shunned
if we put down our guns.

We think, it's always the other,
it could never be me!
Until the day the other,
turns into me.
We just stand there like fools,
believing we need these tools,
that they are necessay
to fight off our "enemy".
And under the cross
we forget those we've lost,
as we pray for our sons
all while keeping our guns.

America is such a complex place and this echoes that complexity. In light of that immense tragedy, it's such a touchy topic... Anyhow, excellent work, it really makes you wonder. Keep creating! You have talent. Best wishes my friend.

Fantastic poem with a string message.

Ever since George Washington said that everyone should have the right to own a gun to fight in order to be free, we have gone on believing that we must have the right to own firearms. It is part of our culture planted deep in us. However we are not still back in the time of cowboys and Indians and anyway look how that turned out! Boy, we can sure be proud of ourselves all mighty Americans so loved through out the world! (I'm being sarcastic in case you'd haven't figured it out)

Well written, a good message to reflect whats going on. We are the one to save innocent lives not to destroy. We should act upon they way we pray. Well done!

I'm not a person who uses guns for sports, or for hunting, or for any kind of use dealing with guns; although I'm not against arming ourselves against the faces of evil and wickedness. I did my time in the Viet Nahm era and I continue to pray for all of those who are armed with both the word of God as well as the needing of guns againsnt the opposition so that we don't look like fools. Again, in my opinion, this was well written.

I'm assuming this was written about the tragedy that took place last friday. If not, this poem sure does describe it well. It is sad though. This whole tragedy turning into a debate over guns. I wish we could just focus on the real issue, and that is those poor innocent lives that were lost. Those little angels didn't deserve to die, and people are more worried about keeping their guns than those lives. It's sad.

But I guarantee that many will have forgotten in a few days even you if you're honest will think about it a little less as days go by. The only way we can really help the situation is by changing it forever and make sure we do everything in our power to diminish the possibility of it ever happening again. We must fight to have stricter rules when it for firearms and prohibiting the ownership of combat weapons by ordinary civilians. Who really needs machine guns in their home ? Would you feel safe if your neighbors kept one in their house?

Disarm yourself if you wish, but note that many shootings happen in so called gun free zones.
Naomi Buote More than 1 year ago
I'm happy it struck a chord. Just remember first, if it was a gun free zone then he wouldn't of used one. Second, how many would be dead if he'd only had a knife to use? Look at the news in China a similar incident happened in a school a guy with a knife over twenty were stabbed but nobody's dead. I'm not saying that all guns should be banned. I've rarely heard of a hunter killing dozens of people. I'm saying that they shouldn't be kept inside of a house unlocked and easily accessible. They are dangerous deadly weapons and people should take responsibility instead of having them proudly laying around just so they can admire them and feel like hot shots. Wow I have a gun look at me! Oh fear me! I'm master of my domain. Watch out, I just might shoot you in the head! Or if ever I go crazy one day or I'm simply depressed I can just pick one up and start shooting why not there right there.
